The American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society. ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine – the built environment – while protecting and restoring the natural environment.

 

Through the expertise of its active membership, ASCE is a leading provider of technical and professional conferences and continuing education, the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering content, and an authoritative source for codes and standards that protect the public. The Society advances civil engineering technical specialties through 9 dynamic Institutes, and leads with its many professional- and public-focused programs.

 

At The University of Memphis the Student Chapter of ASCE seeks to aid in the development of future civil engineers by enhancing minds, teamwork, promoting life lessons, and building skills in leadership, problem solving, and communication.  The chapter actively participates in outreach to schools in the community to encourage the next generation to pursue Civil Engineering, hosting a number of events as part of the Herff College of Engineering's annual E-Day activities.  The University of Memphis participates in the Deep South conference as part of the ASCE's annual regional competitions, competing in events such as the Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Surveying, and others, and has won numerous awards at competitions in the annual conference as well as other events throughout the state of Tennessee.
